I recently used a cement mixer on my block paved driveway and didn’t realise how much of a mess I’d made, well not until 5 days later when it stopped raining! Is there any way I can remove the hardened cement from my block paving?

muriatic acid and a stiff brush will work

hi, i planted my privet hedge 12weeks ago, it has grown well so far. it is about 18 inches tall now! i want to grow it about 6ft tall, but have been told i need to cut (prune?) it, when it starts to grow, as this will keep it thick at the bottom instead of just growing "up" and not out?
hope this makes sense? :) any ideas on how to cut it and keep it thick?

Remember 2 things when pruning it;
1) It will grow 2 little sideways shoots from the tip of each shoot that you cut, thus doubling the number of shoots each time you prune.
2) It will always grow back from where you cut it back to, even if this is into bare wood, as privet has many dormant buds on its bare stems which soon come to life if the green shoots are cut off.
At present you won’t want to cut it back that far, but it’s worth remembering in the future.

If it were my hedge I would now trim it all over, removing about 3-4 inches of the lead shoots on both the sides and the top, so they will all make two shoots in place of the single leaders you have at present. Give it a good liquid feed and keep it well watered. Trim it again in a month’s time, in the same way, and a third time at the end of the summer. Whatever you do, don’t just let it grow upwards if you want a nice dense bushy hedge all over. Privet grows very fast but if you don’t actively prune it so it becomes dense at the base from the first year, it get tall but will be comparatively thin and spindly. Be patient, it will take 2-3 years to get to the size you want, but will then be with you forever!

I live in Wisconsin and this summer a built a pond. It is very small, about 5 feet by 6 feet wide and 18 inches deep in the lowest spot. I am keeping the koi and goldfish in a big plastic tub in my basement but what should I do with the plants? I have water lettuce, water lilies, a corkscrew plant and some reeds. Should I leave the plants in the bottom of the pond? Put them in the basement? Put them in the house?

Put your plants in the basement in damp sand. You will most likely lose your water lettuce.
You will lose your koi – maybe you can find somebody with a huge pond who can adopt them. Your pond will freeze solid when your temps stay below freezing for a week or so.

When a bat is at rest on a tree, it always hangs upside down, does it ever walk on its feet, if it has any?

It’s not so much that a bat has to hang upside down, some bats, such as the famous vampire bat, are quite good at moving around on the ground using their feet and wings as locomotory limbs.

Most bats have developed adaptations that allow them to hang upside down easily. The tendons and ligaments in their feet are arranged in such a way that their natural position is ‘flexed’. It actually takes deliberate effort for them to let go with their feet. So when they wrap their toes around a branch, or hook their claws on a crack or crevice in the rock, they can rest and even sleep without fear of falling off. Their feet are locked in place.

Most bats have their feet pretty much turned around, so that if they were lying down, the soles of their feet would point up. This makes roosting and even catching flying prey easier, but makes walking somewhat ackward. While they can do it if they really need to, they usually don’t. Sort of like a human crawling on their hands and knees. We can do it, but it’s not really what our limbs are adapted to do.

I want to start a garden from grass using only hand tools. I will add rich dirt, manure and whatever i need also. But i plan on using these tools in this order…Do you think i should add others?

1. Hand twist cultivator (till dirt/grass up)
2. Garden scraper/straight hoe (break up grass clumps)
3. Spading fork (loosen deep soil)
4. Hand Cultivator (clean excess grass)
5. Action hoe (remove uncoming weeds)

You have enough to get the job done. Not the most efficient, but it will work.

I mean, how does the leaf blower take air from the outside and shoot it out so much faster? How does the electric pug-in or gasoline come into play? And on average, how fast can air come out of the leaf blower?

Well, for the most part. Leaf blowers use a centrifugal-type fan. Basically the blades spin the air around really fast, which creates a lot of pressure. It works off of the same principal as holding a gallon of milk at arm’s length and spinning it around. The gallon gets a whole lot heavier feeling! Anyway, take that same pressure, funnel it down a small opening and you get a leaf blower. Some of the better blowers can put out winds speeds of over 250mph! But remember, wind speed isn’t everything. The AMOUNT of air your are pushing at that speed is very important as well. Usually, gas blowers are going to be better at this. If you have a small yard and/or don’t like the idea of maintaining a gas engine, then go with an electric. They have come a long way in the last few years and you can even get cordless rechargeable versions now, just don’t expect the same performance as their bigger gas cousins.

I’m replacing two different types of bulbs – one of which is rated 12v 10w and the other is rated 12v 5w and I’m a little confused about what rating bulbs I can use as replacements. Do both values have to be exactly the same in the replacement bulbs or can one / the other / both be higher or lower than the original bulb’s rating?

has to be 12 volt, 10w is brighter than 5w….match them up, if outside….inside youll see the difference, dont like it change it……….

I have an old sink which i plan to fill with water and put some plants in as a water feature. What are the best plants to use .The sinks about 6 – 8 inches deep about 2ft long by a 1ft wide.

It is not deep enough for water lilies but there are loads of other plants to choose from. There are the water irises (Iris Laevigata) which come in white and mauve colours and one that has variegated leaves. Then there’s the yellow Iris (Iris pseudacorus) which always looks so cheerful in the spring and the deep mauve blues of Iris Siberica. No pond is complete without bullrushes but for a small area go for Dwarf Japanese Bullrush. The flowering rush (Butomus Umbellatus), is attractive or smaller reed type grasses such as the various Acorus. Marsh Marigolds are worth considering as well.

Personally from those I would pick yellow Iris and a deep purple Iris, with a variety of Acorus, a tall purple loosestrife in the background, and Menyanthes Trifoliata (bog bean) as a low plant.

In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Bombs, explosions, secondary explosions, explosive devices….how many more times do we need to hear these words being said by 9/11 witnesses before we start asking questions about what really happened on that awful day?

All of the individual news reports in this video can be found on YouTube and other video sites. This video shows that many actual 9/11 witnesses heard and saw explosions going off inside the towers, long before they actually fell. These witnesses include police, firemen and reporters.

And what is even more shocking is the fact that all of this has been largely ignored by the mainstream media after the day itself.

For those debunkers who wish to keep saying that the explosions were caused by gas lines, please save your breath. All of the three buildings that were blown up on 9/11 were all Class-A buildings. This means that gas lines were not permitted because the buildings had to comply with the safety regulations set out for Class-A buildings. So there were no gas lines!

We really need to wake up to the facts and ask questions. If we don’t, what does that say about us?

Sorry about the sync loss with the audio. All of these news clips are available elsewhere on YouTube as well as in the archives of the main news media sites.
