Garters are an excellent starter snake. ALL snakes are a bit skittish at first & all snakes will try & escape, not just garters. Several folks have suggested that you go out & catch one & you should. They will eat earthworms readily & they are easy to get, either dig your own or go to a fish bait store. They will also enjoy eating minnows from time to time (but not all the time, it causes a vitamin deficiency) & these are easy to get as well, again at the bait store or catch them yourself.
If you don’t want to catch one yourself, I’m sure you can find a few kids around the neighborhood that will be glad to get one for you. If worse comes to worse & you decide that a snake isn’t for you or the snake won’t eat, you can always release it back where you found it with no harm done, something you can’t do with a purchased snake.

Garter snakes are a poor choice for a beginner.
They are high strung, difficult to handle, they bite, and musk.
They constantly look for ways to get out of their cages, and usually, eventually find a way.
People tend to feed them fish, which eventually leads to a vitamin deficiency. Or you could feed it earthworms, but they will require lots of them. The people that have the most success with garter snakes feed them mice!
My suggestion would be to get something more suitable, such as a corn snake, and get over your fear of mice.

Well why don't you catch one from the wild? They make just as good pets. I had one I caught in the wild and he turned out to be more spoiled than the cats.

try http://www.reptileauctions.com. good luck. but just so you know, they have the tendency (wild ones at least) to musk on you and it’s not a pleasant experience. it smells horrible, i almost threw up on the spot when it happened to me. lol, just thought i’d warn you. good luck!
