I just dug up an old tree stump that was in a yard and now theres a big hole.Can i just throw grass seed in the hole and cover it back up with dirt or is there a certain way of planting grass seed? Grass seed needs light to germinate, and if it’s buried completely, nothing will happen until the soil is disturbed, or washed off enough that light gets to the seeds. On the grass seed bag it said for new lawns to use scotts starter fertilizer for better results. So i put grass seed with fertilizer. Its been 6 days so far and i dont see anything. Ive put grass seed before and it seemed like it only took 5 days or so… What is the longest it can take? I put sod topper on top of the seeds . A very thin coat just so the birds wont see or eat the seeds. I was told to do this by someone. Bermuda seed will not germinate in Dallas until late May, and fescue won’t survive our summers. Now go drink a beer and relax. I have mostly sandy soil, but some areas are kinda clayey. I have sunny spaces and shady spaces. I am planning on using 2 different types of seeds for the shady and sunny areas. I live in Oklahoma – zone 6 if that matters. We have planted grass seed before but it is really mostly dirt now and we are planning to really plant it heavily this fall and lay hay on top of it to keep it there (we live on a hill). Any suggestions of what type to use or where i can go to research what i would need?

I am getting ready to plant grass in a section of my backyard that is 15′ x 75′, irregularly shaped. I am trying to see which is more cost effective out of sod or seed, so i need help deciding how much seed i would need. I plan to seed very heavily because the area has never been grassy- rock landscaping- and i think it may be harder to grow grass there. any advice? Firstly remove the existing grass which is hard work. Pick and shovel job. Then beat the soil with a shovel and rake out the grass. Level the top soil with a rake. The next step is to buy your seed. I suggest wilkinsons hardare and Diy chain. I bought mine there and it cost about £20 which was the only cost. Turf probably would have cost £300-400. Spread the seed evenly and rake lightly. I watered the garden every day and its now growing nicely. Hope this helps.
