I don’t know the first thing about gardening, but I would like to plant a couple plants, and keep my garden looking nice over the summer. Any hints or tips?

Tomatoes are best for beginners and stick with the basics.

Any garden needs to have some preparation before anything should be planted. If you did not prepare a site–remove sod, ammedn the soil and till–perhaps you should try container gardening to begin with. Tomatoes are great to start with. They are easy and have great results within weeks.

A day is never wasted when you learn something new. Gardening can be one of the most relaxing and fulfilling hobbies that you will find. Our advice is to keep it simple. It’s very easy to go to your local garden center and come back with two or three times the plants you need, they all look so great! my advice, and how I got started about 20 years ago, is to save about $50. each month in winter and then spend it in spring. Read the tags on plants you buy in spring. Sun exposure is very important….pay attention to how much sun your gardens get. If you own your home, focus on perennials….buy 2 or 3 each year and plant accordingly. If you are on a budget, buy plants that spread quickly…..IE obedience plant, lillies, artemesia, hostas (shade only)…..Also, mulch, mulch, mulch. Find a garden center in your area that sells 3 cu ft mulch in bags for around $2.00 each….and mulch about 3 inches thick. It makes things so much cleaner and nicer. And remember, water long and water deep….good luck….If you want to plant showy flowers (annuals) plant them in pots and place them in your flower beds…

I’d have to buy into with you on this. Which is not something I usually do! I really like reading a post that will make people think. Also, thanks for allowing me to comment! Post a comment
